The legend of the Wawa
Jul 23rd, 2007 by Vik
Enter the city of Philadelphia as a newcomer, and you are likely to see one of these. Your neighborhood Wawa. At first you think - what is this 7-eleven doing in the middle of the neighborhood, and then you realize - damn…this is my grocery store!
The whole moment catches you by surprise, actually. One moment you’re living in a suburb shopping at the Super Targets and Tom Thumb’s of the world, and the next your in the middle of a city walking to a glorified 7-eleven for your groceries. I’m not sure I’m a fan so much of the latter, but I’m making due. Between the Wawa and Jin’s Produce market most of the bases are covered.
Also, in case you were wondering what the hell Wawa means, here its from their website.
“Wawa” is a Lenni Lenape Indian word for the Canada Goose that was found in the Delaware Valley, that’s why we use the goose on Wawa’s corporate logo.

Just to add on the origins on what the hell “Wawa” means… listen to the sound of the word and listen to the sound the goose makes while migrating. They are very similar sounding and it’s probably how the Lenni Lenape came up with it. Another tidbit on the sound, In the mid 80’s Wawa had a jingle/tagline they used to use in their advertising. It went like this, “we do it just a little bit better at……Wawa (wonking out the sounding of it kinda like the Aflac duck)”
Great info! Thanks…I like that Aflac duck…
